Understanding CBD Ratios

With the new year comes an increased focus on health and wellness. People all over the country have expressed a desire for more CBD options to treat a variety of ailments. In fact, hemp-derived CBD is currently being shipped to all 50 states. In Colorado, we are fortunate to be able to offer whole plant-derived CBD flower and a variety of CBD-infused products made with locally grown cannabis.

Most people are familiar with the use of pure CBD to treat disorders. It seems like every week there is a news story about a person with a seizure disorder benefiting from the use of a CBD product. But it is important to not ignore the medicinal benefits of THC. Studies have shown that a combination of THC, CBD and various terpenes may be the most beneficial way to provide relief of symptoms from many conditions.

THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) demonstrates analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-nausea properties, whereas CBD (cannabidiol) possesses anti-psychotic, anti-seizure and anti-anxiety properties. Finding the most helpful ratio of CBD to THC in the right form to suit you takes some trial and error. By asking your budtender for recommendations and communicating what effect you are seeking from your cannabis can go a long way toward helping you find that perfect ratio and get the best treatment as well as the most bang for your buck. As always, make sure to consult with your doctor if you are using cannabis along with any prescribed medications.

20:1

Non-psychoactive. For non-intoxicating, purely medicinal effects, choose a very high CBD product. Often used for neurological conditions, pure CBD products are also very effective in treating anxiety, including paranoia caused by over-ingestion of THC.

5:1

Borderline psychoactive. With this ratio, you may feel some effects of THC if you consume a large dose of if you have a low tolerance. Introducing some THC can enhance CBD’s therapeutic effects without causing anxiety.

2:1

Mildly euphoric. Patients who are comfortable with THC may find that they can use products with this ratio for daytime relief of chronic pain and inflammation.

1:1

Euphoric. A balanced ratio is recommended for those who are comfortable with THC and are interested in exploring the therapeutic effects of CBD. This ratio has been found to be the most effective ratio for many medical conditions related to pain, sleeplessness, inflammation, gastrointestinal issues and stress. This is the recommended starting dosage when looking for a product with both THC and CBD.

1:2

Intoxicating in larger doses. A 1:2 or 1:4 ratio can be helpful when medicating during non-productive hours. There is an increased likelihood of psychoactive effects from the THC, but the tradeoff may be more effective pain relief.

1:10

Mostly THC is intoxicating in small doses. Not recommended for treating anxiety, but can be very effective for treating fatigue and appetite loss from cancer or other serious conditions.
