UC San Diego researchers mark more than a decade of health research

Since 2000, researchers based out of the University of California, San Diego, have been conducting preclinical and clinical trials on medical marijuana. Research out of the Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research has focused on the “efficacy of cannabis in patients diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, cancer, seizures or muscle spasms associated with a chronic debilitating condition, or any other serious condition providing sufficient theoretical justification.” The basic question scientists have been posing is: Can marijuana be used as medicine? CMCR’s research indicates a big “yes” as the center has released studies that show cannabis can bring relief to people suffering from spinal cord injuries and multiple sclerosis. But CMCR has also been looking at CBD. In 2005, the center reported how CBD derivatives could have therapeutic potential to treat inflammatory bowel disease and cystic fibrosis. Two years later, researchers were evaluating vaporizing as an effective method of ingesting marijuana—while also comparing THC, CBD and CBN levels. (Michael Carlos)
