[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]O[/dropcap]n Aug. 7, the Public Health Ministry of Thailand officially delivered its first shipment of cannabis oil to 12 local hospitals.

The Thailand Public Health Minister Anutin Chanvirakul was present to oversee the delivery, which included 4,500 five-milliliter bottles of cannabis oil. The oil was provided by the Government Pharmaceutical Organization and delivered to the Public Health Ministry so that they could distribute the medicine to patients. “This is the outcome of legalizing medical cannabis,” said Charnvirakul. “There is no hidden agenda. We only want to support every patient.” An additional 2,000 more bottles of cannabis oil will be delivered sometime in late August.

According to Reuters, there are approximately 4,000 medical patients registered to use medical cannabis. Currently, only registered patients who are undergoing chemotherapy will be allowed to consume medical cannabis.

Charnvirakul didn’t hide his passion for Thailand’s great step forward into the medical cannabis industry. “The freedom for medical usage starts from this point onwards,” he said. He also added that he believes medical cannabis can be an effective treatment for those who suffer from seizures or Parkinson’s disease.

Thailand has issued an “urgent agenda” to deliver one million bottles of cannabis medicine within The next five to six months. While more bottles are expected to be on the way, cultivators are already beginning to prepare for the country’s next cannabis crop later this month as well. Ultimately, the plan is to expand its cultivation efforts to produce 150,000 to 200,000 bottles by 2020. Thailand’s cannabis crops are cultivated in three expected variations: one with THC, one with CBD and one that harbors an equal balance of both compounds.

Thailand has moved quickly into its medical cannabis program, having legalized medical cannabis as well as kratom only last year. Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-Ocha spoke publicly about prioritizing a medical cannabis program. “The study and technological development of marijuana, hemp and other medicinal herbs should be sped up for the medical industry to create economic opportunity and income for the people,” he wrote in a policy document last month.
