Study Reveals Updated Consumption Patterns in Young U.S. Adults

[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]A[/dropcap] new Gallup poll released on Aug. 15 has found that a large portion of “young adults” are consuming cannabis.

The Gallup poll that was conducted between July 1-11, and included a phone call with 1,033 adults. It included a random assortment of adults living in all 50 states, as well as the District of Columbia. As per requirements set by Gallup, 70 percent of surveys were conducted via a cell phone user, and 30 percent via landline.

The data states that 24 percent young adults between ages 18 to 29 admit to consuming cannabis. This percentage is twice the amount that the rest of the 13 percent of middle-aged adults, between 30 to 40 years old, who claim that they “regularly” or “occasionally” consume cannabis in some form. The numbers decrease as age increases, leaving the age range of 50 to 64 at 11 percent, and those older than 65 at six percent. Of this group, 15 percent of men and 11 percent of women admit to consuming.

The poll also asked interviewees about their use of cigars, chewing tobacco and pipes. Unsurprisingly, cannabis consumption was among the highest consumed of all of these categories. The poll also determined basic location data, and found that the highest rate of admitted consumption were from adults living on the west coast by 20 percent, whereas the lowest was reflected at 10 percent in the midwest.

This Gallup poll joins the ranks of many others cannabis-related polls that have been conducted over the years. Often enough, these polls have showed a steady increase in acceptance of cannabis. A Pew Research Center poll from 2016 found that a majority of Americans are pro-cannabis. One Gallup poll from 2017 also confirmed American’s acceptance of the herb. Even earlier this year, a Wall Street Journal poll from 2018 stated that out of 800 adults interviewed, that 60 percent of them supported cannabis legalization.
