Study Finds that Cannabis Does Not Negatively Affect Libido

[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]T[/dropcap]he best lessons are learned from the experiences of others. And a lot of folks have reported that cannabis is helping to improving their sex lives.

Previously it has been believed that cannabis consumption reduces libido due to the lazy “stoner” stereotype. However, a team of scientists from Stanford University in California recently analyzed data from over 28,000 women and 22,000 men who were previously surveyed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And based upon their efforts, the results showed there were no links to negative sexual function or a loss of libido.

“Frequent marijuana use doesn’t seem to impair sexual motivation or performance,” said Michael Eisenberg, the senior author of the aforementioned study and assistant professor of urology at Stanford, in a statement. “If anything, it’s associated with increased coital frequency. The overall trend we saw applied to people of both sexes and all races, ages, education levels, income groups and religions, every health status, whether they were married or single and whether or not they had kids.”

Dr. Jordan Tishler, president of the Association of Cannabis Specialists, an organization composed of doctors with an evidence-based interest in cannabis, has helped many patients in his Boston-area practice achieve better sex lives through cannabis. Although the majority of his patients visit due to chronic pain and anxiety, Tishler says many of them return to discuss the impact cannabis is having in the bedroom. Couples with uneven sex drives and women report the most positive effects. And although everyone is affected by cannabis differently, he recommends vaping for the best effects.

“The interesting bit is that, for both men and women, all of these problems respond well to cannabis therapy, Tishler said in a statement. “In men, the success is a bit more tricky as the dose must be controlled more accurately. Too much and the whole thing gets shut down. I always say, it’s difficult to maintain an erection, etc., when your head is orbiting Jupiter.”

This latest Stanford study isn’t the first of its kind. According to a study published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine last year, the use of cannabis is associated with a 20 percent increase in sexual frequency. So it seems those who consume cannabis enjoy a lot more sex than their peers. Ancient Ayurvedic texts must have been on to something.
