Cannabis JobsThe Green Rush is the new Gold Rush, and jobs are aplenty. There is certainly no shortage of jobs in the cannabis industry, however competition is fierce. For students and recent graduates, getting your foot in the door is no easy feat. Be sure to choose a job that correctly suits your skill level and background. Here are six examples of entry level jobs in the field of cannabis.

Social Media Manager

Develop brand awareness, curate and manage actionable content and use social media tools to expand outreach. A degree in Public Relations, Marketing or Social Media is helpful, but the best tool is experience and familiarity with major social media channels, which are becoming increasingly pertinent in the modern world. Strong Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint experience is a bonus.

Trimmer

Trimmers are typically paid by the pound on commission or paid hourly, depending on the size and location of the operation. It is tedious labor, however, and the job is ideal for those who have quick and nimble fingers and who can handle working 10-12 hour shifts depending on the workload. This is one way to get your foot in the door of the cultivation business.

Petitioner

This job is ideal for hard-working individuals with backgrounds in Political Science, Public Administration or those who simply have a passion for progressive politics. Petitioners gather signatures for ballot initiatives or for pro-cannabis advocacy groups. Gain experience in the exciting field of cannabis advocacy. No prior experience is necessary.

Freelance Journalist

Freelance journalism is one of the fastest ways to earn money at home or with a complicated schedule. A cannabis journalist is a niche journalist, which narrows the range of topics you will write about into one specialized field. Those with a background in English or Journalism or who have mastered AP style and fact-checking should go this route.

Extraction Technician

Extraction technicians or extraction artists have a range of responsibilities including blasting raw cannabis material, creating stable wax and shatter products and handing hazardous waste. An Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry is ideal but not necessary. Understanding the safe practice of handing C02 or butane chemicals is crucial.

Customer Service

From working as a receptionist to budtending, dispensaries are great places to start your career in the cannabis industry. There is much to be learned when it comes to helping patients and customers on the front line, but a lot can be learned by doing the customer service job. This is a great place to start if you’re trying to find your place in the ever-growing cannabis industry.
