Ready to start gulping down gallons of green-tinted beer? Before you do, CULTURE has provided this step-by-step guide on how to prepare yourself for St. Patrick’s Day. You can get drunk later.

1. Study up on a bit of Irish history and the holiday’s history here in the States. For example, St. Paddy’s day came to America in 1737, and was celebrated in Boston that same year. And St. Patrick, according to legend, used the three-leaved shamrock as a symbol for the Christian Trinity.

2. You don’t want to get pinched, but instead of wearing that obvious T-shirt, try another approach. Maybe a T-shirt printed with Irish beer logos (i.e. Harp). If you’re a professional, go for a green striped polo shirt or tie. Try wearing shamrocks pinned to your shirt or blouse. A leprechaun costume . . .?

3. Eat or prepare an Irish meal—NOT corned beef (that’s a tradition in New York City). Instead, try cabbage and lamb stew to keep it real. And potatoes. Can’t forget those.

4. Learn how to dance an Irish jig. Who’s gonna attend a St. Patrick’s Day parade or party and not bust a move, right?
