[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]M[/dropcap]any people utilize the combination of cannabis and coffee to gain both creative insight and the much-needed energy to get things done. A recent study looked at this connection, and how the two affect the brain.

The effects of cannabis are being studied now more than ever before, and even though coffee has been legal for thousands of years, the way it actually works is still something of a mystery because coffee has such a complex effect on the metabolism. Similarly, the interaction between THC, CBD and other compounds in cannabis can be hard to pinpoint.

The study observed at 47 different people in Finland and measured the metabolites in their blood as they gradually consumed more coffee every day. The results reveal that the endocannabinoid system is largely responsible for how substances like coffee and cannabis interact. Apparently, when combined, the chemicals in coffee tend to use some of the same biological pathways that cannabis does, alluding to possible links between the way the two substances work.

“These are entirely new pathways by which coffee might affect health,” Marilyn Cornelis, author of the study and the head of the research team, concluded. “Now, we want to delve deeper and study how these changes affect the body.”

It appears that right now, what is known is that the effects of both coffee and cannabis seem to be heightened by the combination, which is why many choose to make cannabis a part of their morning coffee ritual. As cannabis continues to be studied, this will surely not be the last trial that takes a look at the connection between the two frequently used substances.
