Researchers at McGill University have opened a registry for medical cannabis patients in Quebec. The registry will enroll study participants in a survey and report on the safety and effectiveness of cannabis, according to Huffington Post

It will be known as The Quebec Cannabis Registry  and will be used to produce and store clinical data collected directly from patients who use medical cannabis.

In Quebec, Cannabis is not a medically recognized treatment, and can only be prescribed as part of a research project.

To formally enroll in the registry, one must be entered by a licensed physician practicing in Quebec who prescribes cannabis.

Head researcher  of the study, Dr. Mark Ware, says the information is crucial to track what types of ailments patients are using medical cannabis to treat and to find out what the dosage their using. According to Ware, the project will be a ten-year-long examination and will be made available to the scientific community upon the conclusion of the study.

“We need to improve our understanding of the real-world use of medical cannabis and to make these data available to other researchers and collaborators,” he said. “The registry will eventually help us better understand the possible risks and benefits related to the use of this product.”
