[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]A[/dropcap] handful of residents in greater Salt Lake City, Utah who support Proposition 2 claim that their ballots were stolen right out of their mailboxes—including one man who caught it on video. So far, the residents being targeted all have a Proposition 2 sign on their properties, suggesting that the thefts were politically motivated.

With the 2018 election quickly approaching, things are getting heated, especially in states that are voting on medical cannabis. Utah is among the states with the heaviest debate surrounding cannabis reform. While Proposition 2 would legalize medical cannabis, a “compromise bill” between Proposition 2 supporters and opponents challenges that route to legalization. Things have devolved to the point that residents are allegedly having their ballots stolen.

“I’m mad at this point that someone would think that they have the right to come into my mailbox and take my voting ballot,” Meagan McMullin of Draper told Fox 13. “We have that right to put a sign in front of our yard and to vote the way we want. We live in America, that’s the way it should be.”  McMullin checked with the Salt Lake County Clerk’s office and confirmed that her ballot had been mailed, but mysteriously disappeared.

McMullin isn’t alone. In fact, another resident caught someone red-handed stealing his ballot right out of his mailbox. “Upon reviewing my security camera footage I spotted that white truck just went right through and took my ballot and took off,” West Valley, Utah resident Harrison Doppelt said.

Stolen ballots appear to be a rare phenomenon, but political motivations have risen prior to the 2018 midterm elections. In Utah or in other states, if a ballot is stolen, the voter can simply drive to the nearest polling station in order for their vote to be cast and for their voices to be heard.
