[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]C[/dropcap]anadian cannabis veteran Dana Larsen recently launched Medicinal Mushroom Dispensary, which sells microdose-sized amounts of psilocybin mushrooms, and the online dispensary was announced in the media on June 26.

Each capsule contains a microdose of psilocybin mushrooms and a base of spirulina. Capsules are available that contain 25mg, 50mg and 100mg of psilocybin mushrooms, and they are color-coded in red, purple and blue. In comparison to a psychedelic experience, a typical dose would be much higher and range from 1,000mg to 3,000mg of dried mushroom. At microdose levels, there is only one percent to 10 percent of an active dose, and they will cause mood improvements instead of a heavy experience. The dispensary will work with patients to help them determine the appropriate dosage levels.

“I think that just like cannabis, it is time to start to change the perception of psilocybin mushrooms,” Larsen told CTV News. Psilocybin mushrooms are illegal under Canada’s Federal Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, but that isn’t stopping Larsen from pushing the envelope.

“I think it needs to be done openly as a matter of civil disobedience to defy the law in an open way and hopefully that can make the law change, ultimately.” Larsen also founded The Medicinal Cannabis Dispensary in 2007, which was forced to close after a court ruling.

Psilocybin mushrooms are being explored for their efficacy in treating depression and other mood disorders. “The general feelings you will get is a reduction in anxiety, feelings of calmness and relaxation. It can help you sleep better. It can help you put your life, and maybe your problems, in a better perspective and it can alleviate a depression for people.”

Meanwhile below the border in the United States, Denver, Colorado and Oakland, California have both recently decriminalized magic mushrooms. Other efforts are underway in Oregon and California. The Vancouver Police Department is looking into the dispensary, and there is no word yet as to how they plan on reacting to it.
