[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]Y[/dropcap]ang Qu, a former anti-cancer drug researcher who spent the last five years extracting anti-cancer compounds from plants and studying the biosynthesis of anti-cancer drugs, will soon be Canada’s first academic researcher to focus exclusively on the cannabis plant.

Qu will report in January at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, New Brunswick. He believes that the full potential of cannabis plant is yet to be explored, and he hopes to lead the way in unraveling the vast possibilities that cannabis has to offer, both medicinally and commercially. “Legalization just liberated the research on this plant,” said Qu. “I’m sure that the exciting biological activities in the future that we would gather from this plant would help to grow the industry.”

Qu mentioned that one of the key focuses of this research will be to shed light on the unexplored medical capacity of cannabinoids. He also wants to use this newfound knowledge about cannabinoids to devise more advanced manufacturing methods.

Of all the known cannabinoids, Qu argued that researchers have predominantly studied cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Exploring other types of cannabinoids could help scientists unlock the plant’s efficacy as a medicine. “Once we have more information about the individual activity of the cannabinoids, we can try to produce these cannabinoids in cannabis plants,” he said.

Qu also hopes to improve the makeup of cannabis plants to make cultivation more affordable and make the plants easier to grow both in greenhouses and in colder climates. Moreover, he said he wants to tap into investigating the use of synthetic cannabinoids as opposed to natural cannabis extracts.

But before Qu gets started in January, there are still many hurdles to overcome. Qu mentioned that he has yet to consult with both government agencies and the private sector to find out what kind of research has been done on cannabis so far. This information, he believes, will help him narrow down his focus.
