issouri is known as a conservative state when it comes to
cannabis; in fact, they still have a man in prison for life due to a possession
charge and other outrageous restrictions. However, a recently elected state
representative for the areas seems to actually be in support of pro-cannabis
legislation, so much so that he was asked to appear on a panel to discuss
reforming the image of the plant.

His name is Shamed Dogan, and he is a representative for the
St. Louis area. He attended the Show-Me Cannabis Reform Conference this month,
and announced his support for the plant.

“I think the fact it is a state verses federal thing, that’s
another argument to use with people,” he was quoted as saying by Fox News. “I mean, why should I care
that the federal government’s made it completely illegal, right? Like, why
shouldn’t states be able to experiment and have different policies?”

Dogan identifies as a Tea Party Republican, and is very
supportive of individual and state rights, although he is conservative on other
issues.  While some are surprised that a
Republican would make statements to this effect and act as a speaker on a
legalization council, it is really not all that out of the ordinary. The recent
surge of support for these policies makes it clear that more and more people
favor legalization, and in order to gain the support of the younger generation,
it is important to for Republicans to stay in touch with these issues.

More than likely, this is not the last conservative from a
non-legal state we will see coming out in favor of cannabis reform. If this
keeps up, recreational use will spread even further and every state will start
embracing the outcry.
