Netflix Releases Line of Cannabis Strains

Netflix has released a line of 10 cannabis strains, branded with its logo, with names based on popular original Netflix shows. “The Netflix Collection” was sold at a temporary pop-up that ran from August 25-27 at Alternative Herbal Health Services in West Hollywood.

Per federal law, Netflix cannot legally profit from the sales of the strains, however the pop-up event was created to promote the new Netflix series Disjointed starring Kathy Bates. Three of the 10 strains were inspired by Disjointed.

The line includes strains inspired by Orange is the New Black, Lady Dynamite and Bojack Horseman. Banana Stand Kush, for instance, sold for $65 for 3.5 grams and was inspired by Arrested Development. Moon 13, another strain, was inspired by the reboot of Mystery Science Theater 3000. The strains were sold in lovely glass jars with wooden stoppers. “Each strain was cultivated with the specific shows in mind, designed to complement each title based on their tone,” Netflix officials said in a statement. “For example, sillier shows may be more indica-dominant, while dramedies will be more sativa dominant to help the more powerful scenes resonate.”

Alternative Herbal Health Services was chosen for the event because the dispensary is run by Dina Browner, renamed “Dr. Dina” by Snoop Dogg, who served as the show’s cannabis consultant. The dispensary was also temporarily transformed into Ruth’s Alternative Caring, the fictional dispensary that is the setting for Disjointed. At the pop-up event, many other gifts were available including shirts featuring Ruth Whitefeather Feldman played by Kathy Bates, embroidered baseball caps, pins and tote bags. Unfortunately, the Netflix-inspired strains are not listed on Alternative Herbal Health Services’ regular menu.

Other films and TV shows have been promoted using strains, such as Kevin Smith’s 2014 film “Tusk” with the strains “Tusk” and ”White Walrus.” Netflix is surely one of the largest companies to put their name and logo on a cannabis brand, which is very exciting for any cannabis enthusiast.
