[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]O[/dropcap]n May 31, mother and caregiver Charlotte Caldwell shared photos of her son in a terminal after they received CBD-based epilepsy medicine through a clinical trial in Toronto, Canada. But by Monday, it was clear that U.K. customs officials had confiscated the medicine—the only thing that keeps her son Billy, 12, from enduring life-threatening seizures.

Ms. Caldwell told the media that her son’s life depends on medical cannabis. Before Billy began on a cannabis oil treatment in 2016, he suffered up to 100 seizures per day. But with the help of medical cannabis, he was able to go 300 days without a seizure. The family, from Castlederg in Northern Ireland, has been through many ups and downs. In 2017, Billy became the first person in the U.K. to obtain a prescription for medical cannabis through the National Health Service. But as soon as the family declared they had a six-month supply of medical cannabis-based medicine, the customs staff seized the medicine.

“Without that medicine, Billy’s seizures will return and Billy will surely pass away,” Ms Caldwell told The Independent. “The customs officers were very conflicted about removing the medication from me. One of them had tears in his eyes, he didn’t want to have to do it.

Anyone in the cannabis industry should already be aware that CBD has no psychoactive effects, and shouldn’t be treated like a narcotic.

The decision left the family confused and afraid. “I was absolutely devastated that they took it, considering that I presented it to them with a full analysis and a full report on the clinical trials that have been done on kids like Billy in Canada,” Caldwell added.

According to Ms. Caldwell, Home Office minister Nick Hurd has the power to return the medication back to Billy. Until then, she will continue traveling all the way to Canada to ensure that her son can live a life without seizures.
