Since the inception of the cannabis industry, a major concern has been how to track and catalogue sales properly. The industry has begun to work on regulating and tracking cannabis sales, but unfortunately this step into the digital age (for cannabis, anyway) is resulting in a new problem—becoming vulnerable to cyberattack.

According to the Cannabis Industry Journal, the cannabis point of sales system known as MJ Freeway was recently hacked. The Program’s source code was then stolen and posted on Reddit forums and gitlab.com, a code sharing site. This code contained sensitive information that could be used to edit or alter the website, and have since been taken down.

“Last week we discovered that someone had obtained an outdated portion of MJ Freeway’s source code,” the company explained in an official press statement released after the event. “This incident has absolutely no impact on our systems or MJ Freeway services, and client and patient data is not at risk. While this theft poses no risk to our clients, patients or business operations, we take any incident involving unauthorized access very seriously and have reported it to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.”

The press release went on to explain that they felt their competitors were taking advantage of the incident and spreading untrue rumors about the site being compromised and customer data being leaked or unsafe. They claimed this was not true and customer data had never been in any danger, but that they would be working diligently to find out how the leak had occurred.

This is not the first time that companies within the cannabis industry have been hacked, and since POS systems are so essential for managing seed-to-sale numbers, it won’t be the last. MJ Freeway, one of the leading sales systems so far, is actively working to recover from the setback.
