[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]W[/dropcap]hile legal cannabis is not legal in Minnesota, the state’s governor thinks that officials should get ready for the change that’s inevitably coming.

According to MPR News, despite the fact that cannabis probably won’t be legalized anytime soon thanks to the reluctance of the Senate, Gov. Tim Walz still wants to get ready in case legal cannabis for when legal cannabis does become a reality. He has directed state agencies to prepare for this, just in case, implying that if the bill does get to his desk, he will be likely to sign it. “My agencies have been tasked to put all of the building blocks in place, from Revenue to the Department of Public Safety to the Department of Health,” he explained. “We will have everything ready to go, and we will be able to implement it in Minnesota the minute the Legislature moves this.”

He also says that he is counting on supporters to help push for legalization and help make it a reality. “It’s a big issue that needs a lot of attention to be done well,” House Majority Leader Ryan Winkler, said regarding his involvement with legislation. “We’re going to around 15 listening sessions around the state to hear people’s interests and concerns about cannabis legalization. I think most of us who have looked at the issue think that legalization is the path we have to take. But I don’t want to prejudge that until we’ve had that conversation with Minnesotans.”

This isn’t the first step the state has taken toward being more accepting. Offenders on parole in Minnesota can now consume medical cannabis legally and Alzheimer’s patients now have access to cannabis as medicine. It’s not too far-fetched to think that full legalization could be on the horizon.
