[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]T[/dropcap]he Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs  (LARA) is looking for volunteers to help with the process of developing rules and regulations that will run the future recreational cannabis market in the state, according to a Feb. 25 announcement. These rules and regulations will comprise the Michigan Regulation and Taxation of Marihuana Act (MRTMA).

LARA has until December to develop the rules governing the MRTMA and licenses for the recreational market will be handed out soon after. Commercial sales of recreational cannabis is expected to begin early next year and the recreational cannabis products will be available to consumers who are at least 21 years of age.

According to LARA’s website, the four work groups the state plans to form are as follows:

  • Licensees who are already licensed under the Medical Marihuana Facilities Licensing Act and are interested in entering the adult-use cannabis market.
  • Municipalities that are considering allowing licensed adult-use cannabis facilities in their community.
  • Attorneys who represent cannabis establishments who have an interest in the adult-use market.
  • Individuals or businesses interested in participating in the adult-use market as either a future licensee or a consumer of adult-use cannabis.

To apply for one of the groups listed above, Michigan residents need to send an email to LARA with “WORK GROUP” in the subject line. Candidates should include which work group they’re interested in, name, email address, phone number, occupation and employer, and an explanation and description of qualifications for the selected group. Applications are due by 9:00 a.m. on March 4. Group meetings in Lansing will start in late March.

The state has already started looking at ways to develop the rules and regulations concerning MRTMA, according to Andrew Brisbo, director of the Bureau of Marijuana Regulation. The board is looking forward to collaborating with the selected “stakeholders” in the work groups to work together in shaping the future of the recreational cannabis market.
