[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]F[/dropcap]ormer First Lady Michelle Obama revealed in her new memoir, Becoming, that she smoked cannabis during her formative years. Obama also confirmed that her husband and former president consumed cannabis freely while growing up in Hawaii.

Obama wrote about past life experiences including one in particular when she joined a high school friend named Dave and “fooled around and smoked pot in his car.” Obama also wrote about her husband Barack, who frequently smoked cannabis in the foothills of Oahu, Hawaii. But clearly, smoking cannabis didn’t stop either one from achieving their dreams in the long run.

While former President Barack Obama’s early affinity for cannabis is well-known, little was known until now about whether or not Michelle Obama experimented with cannabis. Unfortunately, former President Obama didn’t federally decriminalize cannabis while in office.

When confronted about including references to smoking cannabis on 20/20 by ABC correspondent Robin Roberts, Obama owned her own words. “You could’ve left that out, so why did you talk about that?” Roberts asked. Obama answered franky, “That’s what I did. That’s part of the Becoming story.”

Obama continued to take it a little further. “Everybody had something that they had to work through, something that they were figuring out. Why would I hide that from the next generation?”

Obama’s candid confessions of smoking cannabis appear to disprove the theory that cannabis causes amotivational syndrome. Both Obamas went on to succeed in education and in the political field. While former president Barack Obama was highly scrutinized for past cannabis use during the 2008 election season, now the Obamas can be open about the details of their personal lives.

So far, sales of the memoir have been impressive. Becoming was released on Nov. 13 and is currently topping Amazon’s best-seller list.
