Massachusetts Snowstorm Affects Cannabis Sales

[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]T[/dropcap]he northern areas of Massachusetts reported the heaviest snow of this winter last weekend as a winter storm struck the state overnight, creating interesting and mixed results for the local cannabis market. The storm began Jan. 19 and continued into Jan. 20. It later transitioned over to rain and sleet causing slick driving conditions and possible power outages.

Last weekend’s snow storm had two drastically opposite effects on recreational cannabis sales in Massachusetts. Customers spent a record-breaking amount of money on cannabis on Saturday while Sunday marks one of the slowest days for recreational cannabis sales since stores opened in November.

According to the data from the state’s Cannabis Control Commission, customers spent a whopping $681,053 last Saturday on 15,790 recreational cannabis products, breaking records with both—the amount of money earned in sales as well as the number of products sold. Seven stores were open across the state on that very Saturday.

On Sunday, recreational cannabis sales also took place at an eighth store, Northeast Alternatives in Fall River, though at least one store, Temescal Wellness in Pittsfield, closed because of adverse weather conditions. It’s not clear if it was the cold temperatures or the rain on Sunday, but evidently customers were put off by the weather. They spent just $188,525 on cannabis products. The only day this figure comes close to is New Year’s Day, when cannabis revenue hit just $156,557.

Since the opening of the first two recreational stores in November, Sundays have typically been a slower day for cannabis sales and revenue, compared to Saturdays, though not usually by such a huge margin. During the previous week, from Jan. 7 to 13, customers spent $624,242 on Saturday and $454,741 on Sunday.
