Massachusetts Cannabis Company Bakes ‘World’s Largest’ Pot Brownie

A Massachusetts-based cannabis company celebrated National Brownie Day in a stylish, bombastic fashion last Wednesday, by baking what it claims is the “largest THC-infused brownie ever made,” according to a news release.

MariMed Inc. took on the mammoth endeavor, in part to promote the launch of its new brand Bubby’s Baked—a multi-state cannabis operator offering “precision-dosed” chewy edibles in three varieties: brownies, chocolate chip and snickerdoodles—revealing the massive dessert on Twitter. And we mean massive. It weighs 850 pounds; it took over 24 hours to bake and prepare, and it measures three by three feet, containing 20,000mg of THC.

For those keeping track at home, that’s 2,000 standard, 10mg servings in a single sweet treat.

“It’s the World’s Largest Cannabis Brownie, presented by our new brand, Bubby’s Baked. Bubby’s are made from scratch with full-spectrum cannabis,” MariMed said on Twitter.

The brownie was baked by a team of five in a large commercial oven at MariMed’s manufacturing facility in New Bedford. The massive dessert needed a similarly massive recipe, including: 1,344 eggs, 250 pounds of sugar, 212 pounds of butter, 5.3 pounds of vanilla extract, 81 pounds of flour, two pounds of baking powder, three pounds of salt and 122 pounds of cocoa powder.

The company is looking for a medical cannabis patient to purchase the final product. A price has yet to be determined, but the pilot brand for Bubby’s Baked, the Bourne Baking Co., sells 250mg of THC edibles at a dispensary in Middleborough to medical patients for $60, according to Ryan Crandall, MariMed’s chief product officer. With that as a benchmark and at the same price point, 20,000mg would run just shy of $5,000.

“Bubby’s Baked fills a big hole in the edibles market that cannabis consumers crave – high-quality, delicious baked goods that stay moist and chewy,” Crandall said in the news release. “For many of us, homemade brownies were our first taste of cannabis-infused edibles. Bubby’s recreates and elevates that nostalgic experience, infusing full-spectrum, craft-quality cannabis into timeless recipes, for a reliable high reminiscent of simpler times. Strategically, Bubby’s is part of our effort at MariMed to build a house of brands that meets different consumer needs across a diverse range of occasions.”

According to USA TODAY, MariMed’s brownie shatters the previous world record for the world’s largest brownie, which was just 243 pounds, according to the Guinness World Records.

“Unfortunately, Guinness World Records rejected our entry because they don’t accept cannabis related records,” Crandall told Miami Herald. “That was a disappointment, but we’re still very proud of what we accomplished!”

Massachusetts first legalized cannabis in November 2016, as voters approved Question 4, effectively ending cannabis prohibition for adults 21 and older. Cannabis became legal for adults to grow and possess in Massachusetts the following month.

And the new market has been successful for the state: Shortly after the Cannabis Control Commissions’s fourth birthday in September of this year, the adult-use market in Massachusetts surpassed $2 billion in gross sales.

Residents seem to be enjoying the legalization of cannabis as well, with 61 percent of respondents to a recent University of Massachusetts Amherst and WCVB poll saying that legal, adult-use cannabis has overall been positive for the state. In addition, 25 percent said it was neither positive nor negative, while only 13 percent said it was negative.

Bubby’s edibles were previously piloted in Massachusetts, under a different name, “Bourne Baking Co.”

The Bubby’s brownie line is available throughout Massachusetts, including MariMed’s Panacea dispensary in Middleborough, Massachusetts, and it is expected to hit dispensary shelves in Delaware and Maryland early next year.
