Because the ’80s refuse to die, MICHAEL MONROE, famous for fronting HANOI ROCKS, returns to rock faces off with a new band this spring. At a recent press conference hosted by BAM MARGERA, Monroe unveiled his new super group (which will basically be called “Michael Monroe” since all the cool band names in the world are already taken) consisting of bassist Sami Yaffa (Hanoi Rocks, NEW YORK DOLLS, JOAN JETT & THE BLACKHEARTS), guitarist Todd Youth (DANZIG, MOTORHEAD, GLEN CAMPBELL), drummer Jimmy Clark (Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, WYNONA JUDD, THE VAN ZANT BROTHERS) and other guitarist GINGER, who needs only one name. In conjunction with this project, Monroe has collaborated on a new iPhone App titled Mobile Backstage, in which users can check out what’s happening on the road and on stage in real time.

In Coachella-related news, it has been announced that a variety of options will be available to make the concert experience more enjoyable, the biggest being that attendees will be allowed in-and-out privileges for the first time in the annual concert’s history. Additionally, Coachella is now in cahoots with Valley Music Travel to sell VIP packages that include hotel and shuttle transportation, and even private home rentals with VIP Coachella access. I’ll not even list the artists on the bill, as they are so numerous it would take up the rest of the column . . . and if you don’t know at least who the headliners are at this point, then you clearly have been living on an island devoid of Internet, radio or other humans.

Prog rock/nerd metal band COHEED AND CAMBRIA are set to release their fifth studio album on April 13, followed by their first US headlining tour in two years. Titled Year of the Black Rainbow, the LP will serve as a prequel to the Armory Wars tetralogy, as chronicled in the band’s four previous concept albums—and accompanying comic books written by lead singer Claudio Sanchez. Told you they were nerds—but man, can these nerds shred!

Revolver Magazine has announced the second installment of its Golden God Awards, set to occur in early May. The event will be hosted by musician ANDREW W.K., and WWE wrestler CHRIS JERICHO. JUDAS PRIEST frontman ROB HALFORD and MOTORHEAD singer/bassist LEMMY KILMISTER are to be honored this year, and the event will include musical performances by ROB ZOMBIE, FEAR FACTORY, AS I LAY DYING, THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA and ZAKK WYLDE. Additionally, comedian Brian Posehn apparently has put together an all-star band featuring Scott Ian (guitarist of ANTHRAX), Brendon Small (creator of Metalocalypse)Tempesta (drummer for Rob Zombie, TESTAMENT, EXODUS) and Joey Vera (bassist for FATE’S WARNING and ARMORED SAINT).
