[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]O[/dropcap]n the Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and in an interview with Us Weekly, Kevin Smith credits cannabis for saving his life after surviving a life-threatening heart attack on Feb. 25.

Just before the heart attack, Smith—as he does daily—smoked a joint. And the 47-year-old believes that he may not have survived the ordeal if he hadn’t been able to carry himself calmly, thanks to cannabis.

“The whole time, I’m chill. The paramedic, he goes, ‘You’re being real calm. That’s going to get you through this,’” Smith said. “There was a dude behind him who goes, ‘That’s what’s going to save his life.’ I was like, ‘What does that part mean?’”

Smith admitted that he performs while under the influence of cannabis.

“I’d smoked a bunch of weed that day because I was doing the show, and then I smoked a joint right before the show,” Smith added. “Then I got off stage and all of a sudden I had a heart attack. I asked my doctor after this was all done, I was like, ‘I hate to ask this question, man, but did I have a heart attack because of the weed? Because I smoked a joint right before the show.’”

While horrifying, the heart attack has led Smith to lose 32 pounds to improve his health. He recently partnered with Weight Watchers as a WW Freestyle ambassador.

CULTURE Magazine is personally thankful that Smith ended up surviving the heart attack. “I don’t think I’ve encountered anything in my life that has made me more okay with the notion that one day I’m going to pass from this world than marijuana,” Smith prophetically told CULTURE in 2013. Smith didn’t start smoking on a daily basis until age 38 when Seth Rogen re-ignited his interest in the plant. While Smith may have endured some health problems, cannabis definitely isn’t one of them.
