[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]P[/dropcap]residential candidate Sen. Kamala Harris admitted that she smoked cannabis in the past and supports legalizing the plant on a Feb. 11 episode of “The Breakfast Club.” Harris is running for the president of the United States in the 2020 election and goes against fellow Democrats Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Sen. Cory Booker, Rep. Tulsi Baffard and several other contenders. The winner of the primaries is expected to most likely faceoff with President Donald Trump.

When questioned, Harris was candid about her consumption of cannabis in the past. “The Breakfast Club” co-host Charlamagne Tha God asked Harris if she ever smoked cannabis while she was on the show as a guest.”I have. And I inhaled—I did inhale. It was a long time ago. But, yes,” Harris replied. The senator explained that she experimented with joints while attending college.

As an older woman, her views on cannabis have slightly evolved. Harris admitted that she has some lingering qualms about sweeping laws in multiple states that are legalizing cannabis. “But I am absolutely in favor of legalizing marijuana. We’ve got to do it,” she said. “We have incarcerated so many, and particularly young men and young men of color, in a way that we have not for the same level of use (among) other young men.”

As former California attorney general, Harris holds a large body of knowledge about how cannabis regulations are enforced in the county’s most populous state. Despite this, her track record on support for cannabis reform while serving as attorney general remains spotty. Many people, however, have called her the best chance of winning for the Democratic Party in the early stages of the 2020 election. Her campaign trail has been among the most enthusiastic campaigns this year.
