Indiana Lawmaker Files Bill to Legalize CBD Oil

Indiana is known for its strict drug policy, but recently one of the state’s senators filed a bill that would legalize the sale of CBD.

According to WTHR, Indiana Sen. Jim Tomes filed SB-21 and SB-214 last week in an attempt to make the substance legal throughout the state. “When we’re done, CBD will be as easy to obtain as baby aspirins,” Tomes stated in an interview with WTHR just before filing the bill.

The bill will change the current wording of Indiana law so that “controlled substance” no longer refers to CBD, making it completely legal, not just decriminalized or legal for medical consumption. This is happening because of the recent raid on CBD products in Indiana. The crackdown included raiding grocery stores that were legally selling non-psychoactive CBD products.

Tomes claimed that many have benefited from the products, and that they should be readily available to all. After speaking to many who consume CBD medically, he understands just how much it means to those who rely on it for relief.  “These are families that have the horror and the anguish of dealing with medical conditions and, if that’s not bad enough, now we’re in a turmoil of what’s going to be legal and what’s not,” he stated. “I want this bill to just cut to the chase, just get rid of all of this unknown and just make this product legal for them.”

Despite the many issues that have been faced in the state, advocates in Indiana are determined to make CBD medically available for all. Although this is still a far cry from full recreational legalization, it is clear that there are some people on the side of cannabis reform.
