[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]T[/dropcap]here are some people whose favorite genre of movie is horror, and they see many of the new horror films that release throughout any given year. But most people just get the itch to watch a few scary movies around October, and for good reason. Halloween is one week from today, so it’s time to plan out your frightening list of this year’s newest horror flicks available in theaters and on streaming services.

The Nun (September 7)

Viewers who get a kick out of jump-scares will delight in this spooky movie. It may not have much to offer for an elaborate story plot, but one thing is for sure—demonic nuns in an ancient abbey are terrifying.

Mandy (September 14)

If you’re looking for a ridiculous, over-the-top horror film, you can’t go wrong with Mandy. Starring Nicolas Cage, the Sundance Film Festival entry involves a hippie cult, cannibalism, a “demonic biker gang” and a ton of violence.

Apostle (October 12)

Set at the dawn of the 20th Century, Thomas Richardson sets out to Wales to rescue his sister, who was kidnapped by a cult. Although he is a former Christian missionary, Thomas must proceed into the cult undercover in order to bring her home. The cult is gruesome and very fond of blood sacrifices, which the leaders of the cult claim is how the land became fertile.

Halloween (October 19)

How many remakes have emerged under the name Halloween? Google says about 11 since 1978. It’s become a staple on any “Top 10 classic horror films” list, and not all of them were spectacular—but this time, Jamie Lee Curtis reprises her role from the original film. The white-masked villain has remained in an insane asylum for decades. This Halloween takes a different approach. Michael escapes from an insane asylum, nothing new there, but Curtis’ character has trained for the day she might have an opportunity to end him for good.

Suspiria (November 2)

This horror flick is a remake of the 1977 film of the same name. Set in Berlin, Germany, a small dance company becomes the setting for some conspicuous supernatural happenings. An American dancer auditions to become a part of the prestigious academy, but eventually finds that there is more than meets the eye when it comes to the women who run the company.

HONORABLE MENTIONS

The Haunting of Hill House (October 12)

If you’re looking for a binge-worthy show, then this is it. The Haunting of Hill House contains 10 episodes, all about an hour long, and contains a balance of jump scares and mystery that keeps viewers wanting more.

It: Chapter Two (September 6, 2019)

A horror movie isn’t complete with It. Sadly, the sequel to the remake from 2017 won’t be arriving until next year but it’s worth noting that we have something to look forward to about 365 days from today. It’s got everything you need for a good scare, and it promises to be even more terrifying than the first remake.
