With Thanksgiving mere weeks behind us and Christmas—and all those other winter holidays—coming up, this is the time of year that really gets you thinking. Obviously, we had a lot of ups and downs last month related to Proposition 19 and the question of who was going to be California’s Attorney General (Kamala, you go, girl!).

But it’s time to think about the future, a future burning brightly. After all, New Year’s Eve is just a handful of weeks away and that means two things: One, we’re roughly two years closer to the end of the world (It’s Dec. 21, 2012, in case you didn’t know. Go ask the Mayans). And two, it’s time to think about how lucky we are, count our blessings and reflect on the awesomeness of the past 12 months—and the 12 months yet to come.

I’m lucky that I live and work (and play, definitely play) in California. For all of its legal quagmire, this is still one of only 15 (plus Washington D.C.) states in the country with medical-marijuana provisions on the books. God bless you, Golden State.

I’m lucky that we have patients and growers and collectives and artists and musicians and businesses that revel in our extraordinary lifestyle and celebrate it every single day.

I’m lucky to be the editor of this magazine. It’s the best one around. Trust me on this.

Don’t be surprised if others are feeling the same way. Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa—what have you—have that sort of warm-and-fuzzy effect.

The budtender will seem extra helpful. Christmas dinner will taste, well, extra tasty. And the medicated mashed potatoes—well, you know.

And don’t even get me started on the decadent, three-day orgy coming up that goes by the name of New Year’s Eve weekend. Nice.

This is truly a special time, when I think about my favorite Christmas movie. No, not It’s a Wonderful Life or The Greatest Story Ever Told. I’m talking about A Charlie Brown Christmas. It’s when Linus says:

“. . . and on Earth, peace, good will toward men.”

In the words of Linus, peace.

Happy holidays and Happy New Year!
