Hip to Hemp: Interview with Kyle Kietrys, Co-Founder of M3 Life Science

This year is the time to confront hard truths and establish a new normal, and one of those areas that needs help is the earth and the environment. In honor of Earth Day week, with reflections on the environment and healing, we chatted with Kyle Kietrys, co-founder of M3 Life Sciences, about how hemp can help with the global, environmental crisis.

How did you first get interested in hemp, and why did the industry appeal to you?

It all started in 1990 when I read Jack Herer’s book, The Emperor Wears No Clothes, which profoundly influenced me, as I first realized that cannabinoids like THC must be medicine—since we had receptors in our brains for them. This led me to study Environmental Geography at grad school, specifically the sustainable agriculture practices of The Maya. I’ve always been an entrepreneur, so when I left grad school, I entered the wellness space and opened a health food store and started selling Hemp seeds and hemp cereals in the late ’90s along with food state vitamins and many other unique items. I understood that it’s about listening to and understanding ancient wisdom—like Hippocrates said, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine that food.”

So, I started studying the gut and how repairing the gut could have incredible results. I recommended hemp protein because it was the only complete vegetable protein with an ideal ratio of essential fatty acids. We had many incredible results with mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression, issues that were resolved not by taking antidepressants but by fixing the gut!

I became very discriminating with the products I would stock, paying critical attention to the ingredients. It seemed contrary to me that companies would add synthetic, highly processed and other toxic ingredients. How would they benefit my customers on the healing journey? I continued teaching others to activate their “inner healer” for many years by shifting their perspectives to reclaim their own, innate healing power.

Eventually, in 2012, I added Rick Simpson Oil or RSO to my toolbox after learning more about the Human Endocannabinoid System, HECS, and that we produce our own cannabinoids both in our brain and in our gut, knowing that 70 percent of our immune system is in our gut and again going back to Hippocrates’ wisdom that most disease begins in the gut as inflammation.

My “Gut Guru Toolbox” was really coming together. I worked with many people over two decades who suffered from depression, anxiety, inflammation, sleep issues, opioid addiction, IBS, cancer, OCD and so many others.

You might think I am a little off topic here, but I promise you I will demonstrate the fundamental interconnectedness of all things and how this fits in with hemp.

Many doctors are now promoting functional medicine, which endeavors to get to the root cause of disease and involves balancing the gut microbiome. I have a three-step process to detoxify, rebuild and optimize the gut which allows the microbiome to flourish. If you consider that 70 percent of our immune system is in our gut, and the concentration of CBD-type receptors are more prevalent there than anywhere else in the body, we can see that CBD from hemp can have a profound influence on the proper functioning of our digestive system!

Since I was a big proponent for medical marijuana, I initially entered the California Medical Cannabis space when California went fully legal in 2017. My intention was to bring cannabinoid medicine to as many people as possible, but still, THC had a stigma and it was not widely accessible to people across the country. So many people still get drug tested or have issues with the intoxication side and that interfered with their ability to function in their everyday lives.

After a brief time in that space I learned about CBG or cannabigerol, the recently discovered but “OG Cannabinoid,” the Mother Molecule for all three lines of cannabinoids: CBD, CBC and THC. Not only that, but CBG fully activates your ECS without intoxicating you. So we started our hemp company, M3 Life Sciences, to promote the healing benefits of both CBG and CBD which can be derived from hemp.

Personally, I see the ‘Hemp Solution’ as one that could potentially heal our bodies, rebuild and empower our communities while healing our soil and solving world-wide issues like climate change without causing political divisiveness or further separating us from each other.

How much could using hemp fiber as a substitute for synthetic fibers impact the environment?

It’s not just hemp fiber but every single part of the plant. Synthetic fibers come from the petrochemical industry, so switching to hemp would dramatically reduce the need for toxic Petro chemicals, but it’s a long road ahead before we can say we have a proper “hemp economy.”

Hemp can even be turned into plastic—Henry Ford built a hemp-based plastic car nearly 100 years ago. And hemp creates biodegradable plastics that can break down and enrich the soil. Imagine if all single use plastic instead was biodegradable plastic, there would be no impact on sea-life or bird-life. There would be no Pacific gyre plastic debris field.

Hemp fiber turned into clothing could be passed down for generations. While we know that it can have a tremendous beneficial impact on the environment, achieving a fully functioning hemp economy won’t be easy.

We need to approach life with a philosophy similar to Shumacher’s “Small is Beautiful” or McDonough’s “Cradle to Cradle” rather than our instant gratification and disposable, throw-away society that dominates our paradigm today.

Since every part of the hemp plant can be utilized, it truly can be a zero-waste industry.

But, to do all this, we need the support of industry associations. We need government support that incentivizes farmers to grow hemp. We need incentives and regulations that would require large companies to invest in manufacturing the equipment that would utilize hemp inputs.

Is there anything specific right now that you want to announce or promote?

Our company is a socially conscious hemp and wellness company using sustainable practices and packaging.

On Earth Day April 22, we are hosting a free screening of the movie REGENERATION by Earth Heroes TV, which shows ways we all help restore the planet with regenerative farming techniques, reef restoration and permaculture.

We have a line of CBG products thaw we are extremely excited about: CBG is the mother cannabinoid (a stem cell), and it is the only know cannabinoid that can activate both CB1 an CB2 receptors, It is being studied all over the world currently and its potential is enormous. It is being studied for eyes, cancer and is believed to have Super antibacterial and anti-viral properties, so it may be able to address superbugs and viruses.

Take a look at M3.Life to learn more, and visit our shop at Badassbandit.shop to view our CBD and CBG products and merchandise. We are really excited about our combo CBD:CBG tincture available this month; initial feedback has been really good for issues like stress, anxiety and sleep and older pets being able to walk up and down a full set of stairs after just two weeks. It will first be available in cinnamon, and we will be adding some new natural ingredients to enhance for specific benefits.
