[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]O[/dropcap]n Wednesday evening, the High Times Cannabis Cup event in San Bernardino was denied its permit to allow cannabis on the premises, just two days before the scheduled 3-day event. After 30 years of successfully running Cannabis Cup events in Europe or the United States, now that cannabis is legal in California, the event faces some of the worst opposition it’s ever seen.

Lori Ajax, chief of the California Bureau of Cannabis Control, told NBC News that the event would take place, but only if they received the green light from the San Bernardino City Council. The San Bernardino City Council voted 6-0 on April 18 to deny organizers a permit, rendering the event a cannabis-free event.

City council members Virginia Marquez and John Valdivia were especially concerned about having a cannabis event in their city. According to city staffers, applicants for events of this nature are required to obtain local approval in order to get state approval 60 days in advance, which they say never happened.

In response to the denial of the permit, High Times emailed a statement to ticketholders. “High Times is looking forward to all of our stellar attendees having a great time and enjoying the amazing musical lineup,” the company said in a statement. “We also have a bunch of new experiences such as a petting zoo, lazer tag, tattoo village and more.” The company then added “..and remember it’s legal to bring your own bud!”

An estimated 20,000 attendees were expected to attend, paying $60-$420 each. Without cannabis vendors, it’s unclear how extensively the festival will be affected.

The event takes place April 20-22 at the NOS Events Center in San Bernardino with Nas, 2 Chainz, Lil Wayne, Fabolous, T.I., Rick Ross, Lupe Fiasco and more scheduled to perform. Cannabis Cup was founded by High Times’ Steven Hager and the first event took place in 1988 in Amsterdam, the only reasonable place at the time that allowed cannabis consumption.
