How and when did your collective start up?

In 2010 we met with the city planner and the founder of 3rd Coast Compassion Center and discussed locations and voids that needed to be filled in this market. For several months we worked together and came up with a sensible ordinance to help meet the needs of patients.

What’s the story behind the name of your collective?

We wanted something somewhat discreet sounding, but still have a name that shined light on cannabis, as an Herbal Medicine, rather than a “street drug” or simply something “Pothead” sounding. With society becoming more and more accepting of cannabis as an “herbal solution” to a plethora of medical conditions, we only felt it would be right to name our business Herbal Solutions.

What does your collective offer patients that they can’t find anywhere else?

Seeing how collectives pretty much use the same blueprint, this would kind of be a hard question to answer. We do, however, take pride in our wide selection of meds. Test results for all of our meds are available for our patients to review anytime, at their request; we are aware that not all collectives offer this for their patients. That, along with our knowledgeable staff and their excellent one-on-one interactions with patients makes us stand out as a premier collective in this market.

How has the cannabis industry changed since you have been in the business? Where would you like to see it go?

Being that we were the second licensed provisioning center in the state, we have seen the industry grow from a small grows and centers to very large professional centers that offer more of a variety of meds. We’d like to see more people in it for the patients rather than just the money. We would also like to see the industry continue to grow and allow patients to keep safely accessing their meds. Lastly, we want to see the state progress in the right direction and show and prove to people that cannabis is a medicine, rather than a “bad drug.”

By far the biggest challenge is banking! Collectives have had plenty of issues locally and federally about monies deposited. Many times bank accounts are temporarily seized, which can cause a domino effect in any business and cost business owners time and money to fight. Our biggest joy, by far, is seeing patients first hand who have experienced the positive results from using cannabis or cannabis-based products, rather than using pharmaceutical drugs. We find joy on weening patients off of their pharmaceutical drugs and the horrible side effects they can cause.

If someone wanted to open a collective and get their feet wet in the industry, what advice or counsel would you give them?

Establish a great relationship with your local municipalities, be transparent and have great legal and accounting representation that is knowledgeable in the cannabis laws and tax codes. Take it from people that have been at this for awhile, it’s not as easy as you think to do it by yourself!
