If there’s one image that pops into anyone’s mind when they think of their local state fair, it is food. Funnel cakes, sloppy joes with donut buns, tater tots covered in caramel sauce and countless other uniquely unhealthy but oh-so-delicious dishes are always present, and it’s mostly the reason that anyone goes to the fair at all. Taking the savory route is a new food item to try out—the Kentucky Hemp Dog.

As its name suggests, it’s only currently planned for release in at the Kentucky State Fair, which runs August 18-28. Although hemp is still seeking for spotlight in the eyes of many, the Kentucky Hemp Dog was invented to help support local beef sales for the state, “People have really been fussing the last two or three years that we can’t get local beef into the Kentucky State Fair. We really want to do a Kentucky Hemp Dog to get the buzz where people will try it,” says local cattle farmer David Neville.

Neville is the creator of the hemp dog, who thought to add a three percent hemp protein content that acts as the glue to bind the meat together. He also adds hemp hearts and a small amount of hemp oil for flavor. Hot dogs may fit into the epitomized category of unhealthy foods, but the addition of multiple sources of hemp does help contribute to the Omega 3 and Omega 6 healthy fats, as well as bonus protein content coming from the hemp powder, makes this one of the healthiest beef-based hot dogs.

The Kentucky Hemp Dog is available to anyone who wants to try at the Henry County Harvest Showcase. There, attendees can discover locally grown food and handmade products while learning first-hand how Kentucky products are the bee’s knees.
