ith the harsh winter
months doing extra damage to your skin this season, give the gift that keeps on
giving, custom made, all natural moisturizing oil. With a base of hemp seed
oil, your skin is going to thank you! Hemp seed oil contains Omega-6 and Omega-3
fatty acids which are key components in maintaining healthy skin. The linolenic
acid present has beneficial anti-inflammatory properties. When the seeds are
pressed, they produce a natural moisturizer that is slightly thick, but not as
greasy as one would expect, making it great for psoriasis and a plethora of
other skin conditions. The oil produced is said to resemble the protein found
in human blood, which is amazing. The closest you can get to what your body
already produces the better. Don’t be afraid of oil, it is your friend—especially
if you wash your face with something that strips away your natural oils.
Replacing those oils with something nourishing should make your face extremely
calm, clean, moisturized and happy. Here is our recipe to help guide you to the
best winter facial moisturizer of your life.

Your
Perfect Moisturizing Oil

To make your own specialty
facial moisturizing oil, we suggest a base oil, extra nourishing bonus oils,
and a third oil which should just be your favorite essential oil for an added
flourish.

With hemp seed oil as our
base/carrier oil, we can move on from there. Hemp seed oil is great for
sensitive skin due to its light consistency. Plan on your base oil being at least
2/3 of your facial oil mixture.

Then, you get to choose
your extra nourishing bonus oils. Here are some ideas for the more nourishing
bonus oils: Tamanu oil (good for acne-prone, oily skin or skin with scars), sea
buckthorn oil (powerfully nourishing, this is a great oil for all skin types,
but especially aging or dry skin), rosehip seed oil (incredibly regenerating,
this oil is known for its firming and anti-aging capabilities), borage oil
(high in oleic acids, this oil is great for most skin types, but especially
oily and acne-prone skin), evening primrose oil (acne, aging, normal skin),
neem oil (antimicrobial and healing, good for acne and oily skin) and emu oil
(strong emollient, protective and nourishing for dry or aging skin).

Next, you can pick a third,
extra oomph, essential oil to finish off your mixture. A few of our favorites
include: Lavender (acne, oily, or even dry skin—lavender is healing, but a
little, tiny bit goes a long way), peppermint (great for oily and acne-prone
skin, but it’s very astringent so use very little), chamomile (healing and
soothing, great for all skin types), rose (wonderful for aging, dry and normal
skin), rose geranium (very healing, especially good for dry, sensitive, aging
skin), palmarosa (great for any skin type, but especially for acne-prone skin),
lemongrass (brightening and toning) and rosemary (good for acne-prone and oily
skin).

MIXING IT UP

This is where the fun starts. You
get to experiment with what type of blend works best for your skin, but here’s
the BEST place to begin.

We’re going to assume you’re using
The following ratios are intended for a 1-oz bottle so if you use a smaller
bottle, adjust your essential oil additions downward as necessary.

1.     Fill
your bottle just under 2/3 of the way with your base hemp seed oil

2.     Add
your “bonus nourishing” oil until the bottle is just about full

3.     Add
ONLY 4-7 drops of essential oil. Less if you’re using peppermint, especially.
Cap and shake well after each drop, and you can gauge, very roughly, just how
much essential oil you’ll need. You should be able to smell it, but it should
not be overpowering. Just faintly identifiable.

Rule of Thumb: Never, ever use facial oil or
moisturizer on a dirty face. Always cleanse before applying. If you put oil or
moisturizer on top of a dirty face, you’ll just help seal in all that dirt and
grime, which may inflame or irritate your skin.
