How and when did your dispensary start up?
Green Dragon began with a fiery passion to offer the highest quality cannabis to the first medical market in the world. It all started in 2009 with one single location on legendary Colfax Avenue in between the Fillmore and the Ogden Theater, and has now grown to 12 locations (and growing) across Colorado.
What’s the story behind the name of your dispensary?
Dragons are powerful, awe-inspiring, mythical creatures that have captivated the imagination of human cultures for millennia. Cannabis has played a similar role throughout human history, sparking wonder and creativity throughout the world. Green Dragon is passionate about cannabis and medicated products and is committed to preserving a sense of magical fascination with this amazing plant.
What does your dispensary offer customers that they can’t find anywhere else?
Our unique shopping experience is unlike any other dispensary. As soon as you enter, you’ll notice the difference—no high-pressure sales, just experienced and friendly sales staff; customers can wander around the store at their own pace with no lines to wait in (there’s a virtual queue). All Green Dragon stores are designed with customer convenience in mind—brightly lit, clean and welcoming. There are easy-to-read menu boards, easy-to-understand displays.
How has the cannabis industry changed since you have been in the business? Where would you like to see it go?
The cannabis industry has come a long way since we started in 2009 when the average store looked like your stereotypical “hippie pot shop.” Dispensaries have greatly improved the retail experience for the consumer by offering loyalty programs, online ordering, and superior customer service much like a typical retail store in any other industry. Eventually, we would like to see the stigma surrounding cannabis to disappear, allowing consumers around the country to have access to this product without negative consequences.
What are the biggest challenges you face in this industry as a dispensary? . . . Biggest joys?
Access to traditional financing to grow our business is one of the biggest challenges we face. In addition, state regulations are always changing and becoming more stringent, making it difficult to navigate without an experienced compliance and operations team.
As for biggest joy—it’s the satisfaction knowing that we are part of a new, exciting, dynamic industry. This is one of the most significant changes taking place in our lifetime.
What is the one thing you want customers to know about your dispensary?
Green Dragon offers the largest selection of cannabis products in the state at the most contentious pricing. With a vast selection of apparel, glass, and other accessories as well as an excellent loyalty program and online ordering—it’s difficult to find another dispensary to match our standards. Not to mention that we are launching our brand new line of edibles and concentrates, too.
If someone wanted to open a dispensary and get their feet wet in the industry, what advice or counsel would you give them?
It’s harder than you think, and it’s not a golden ticket to mint money. It’s a very competitive and a highly regulated business.
What do you hope to accomplish in the cannabis industry?
We hope to contribute to the eventual end of prohibition of marijuana in the United States. By normalizing the acceptance of cannabis, we would end one of the largest social injustices of our time.
