Unsurprisingly, “cannabis” was a popular search keyword in 2017. In fact, Google Analytics recently broke down exactly who was searching for what, and where those people live.

Google Analytics reported on trends in the United States and looked at how exactly people were searching for cannabis. The words “weed” and “pot” are used in too many non-cannabis-related searches to yield helpful results, but other words like “marijuana” and “cannabis” tell exactly how people are looking up the leafy green.

Interestingly, it appears that in areas with legal cannabis or more friendly policies when it comes to decriminalization and medical cannabis, the same amount of people searched for the terms “marijuana” and “cannabis.” Washington, California, New Mexico, Alaska, Colorado, Maine, and Massachusetts all saw a similar number of searches for the word “cannabis” as they did for the slang term.

However, when it comes to the term “medical marijuana,” that combination of words was searched much more often than “medical cannabis,” or the same combination with “weed” or “pot.” “Weed brownies” was searched more often than the same combination with “cannabis,” “marijuana,” “CBD” or “pot.” “Bong” was still the most searched-for term when it came to imbibing the cannabis, over “vape pen” and “vaporizer.”

Along with what phrases are used and searched for the most, the data reveals that in states where cannabis is legal or soon to become legal, many people were concerned about the words and actions of Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

As 2018 begins, cannabis and its related terminology will surely still be a hot topic that is widely searched on the web. From looking up dispensaries and dosing, to investigating wild claims about cannabis and the ebola virus Despite the variations of searches, it is clear that “cannabis” is becoming a more accepted search term as legalization spreads, and that people in legal places care about and search for topics relating to cannabis.
