Culver City-based MedMen boasts luxury cannabis stores in California, Nevada and New York, with plans of expanding further. Along with Villaraigosa, the board will include Stacey Hallerman of Montblanc and Cartier and Jay Brown of Jay Z’s RocNation. The addition of Villaraigosa adds a unique political facet to the board.

“Few people understand Los Angeles and our home state better than Mayor Villaraigosa,” MedMen Chief Executive Adam Bierman said in a press release. “He will be instrumental in guiding MedMen’s expansion in the Golden State and through his broad network, Mr. Villaraigosa will help MedMen solidify its presence across the country.” Villaraigosa’s unparalleled experience with the challenging city of Los Angeles will help the firm grow.

“I’m excited for this opportunity to shape the cannabis industry and its commitment to social equity by joining the board of the company that is leading the charge,” Villaraigosa said. The former Los Angeles mayor suggested that he may be focusing on social equity and the people who have been harmed most by the “War on Drugs.” Last June, Villaraigosa lost the Democratic gubernatorial primary to Gavin Newsom. But MedMen was one of the few cannabis companies that stood behind Villagairosa. The company donated the maximum legal limit to his campaign.

In the past, Villaraigosa has become involved with other companies including Herbalife as an adviser and Banc of California.

Recently MedMen went public on the Toronto-based Canadian Securities Exchange, which so far has embraced cannabis companies. Also recently, MedMen acquired the rights to the Woodstock brand—yes, the enormous 1969 festival—with plans for an exclusive licensing agreement. The company plans to continue opening luxury cannabis shops in high profile areas.
