Feel the Influence: Stoney Spike

Cannabis photographer, advocate, talent manager, content creator, and of course cannabis influencer, Stoney Spike is a renaissance woman. Her influence not only reaches her followers, but the followers of the many well-known cannabis personalities in her circle. Spike, whose real name is Amanda Fox, told CULTURE about her love of cannabis, how being an influencer has changed her life for the better, and what she hopes to accomplish with her influence.

How’d you get started in cannabis content creation?

I’ve been active in cannabis activism in the Los Angeles area since I was 18 and got my medical marijuana card. Since then I’ve been very active in cannabis advocacy. Finding out which dispensaries were getting shut down, and fighting for patients’ rights, that kind of stuff. In order to get the word out for that kind of stuff, I just started being online and started to connect with people who were like minded about cannabis. And I kind of fell into a group of other cannabis influencers, and cannabis creators from being around events and stuff, and being around the same people. I love cannabis, and I went to school for photography, so why not marry the two things I love and make cannabis content.

How did you go about building your following?

Honestly, I have a relatively small following, and it’s kind of just happened organically.

I just post what I want to post, and I am active following other people whose content I like. And they started checking out my stuff, and sharing it. Becoming friends with other cannabis content creators is basically how I grew my content. That’s about it. I don’t really think about growing my following, it just kind of happens.

How has your work as a cannabis influencer impacted your everyday life?

It’s definitely impacted my life for the better. I’ve been able to stop working my job that I had before. And now I run a cannabis talent management company, where we help other influencers with brand deals, and work in marketing for Theweedtube.com. It totally changed the trajectory of my life. I was working in film, onset, on my feet, sometimes 18 hours a day. I blew out my knees. I’m only 31 and I have tons of joint problems from my long days of work. So it was able to get me off my feet and put me in a space where I get to be creative and meet like minded people in cannabis.

What do you hope to accomplish with your work as a cannabis influencer?

My goal in putting out the content I do, is to educate people about the truth about cannabis, and how it can help them in their lives. The important thing for me when it comes to cannabis, is how it helps people medically. From my experience with having friends with epilepsy, and living with my boyfriend who has cystic fibrosis, and seeing how it’s helped benefit them, and how I know it’s helped me. Medical marijuana advocacy is my biggest thing. I want to get as much information out there as I can, and help distill it so it’s easy to understand and in turn see if it can help them in their lives. Because I feel like if people are more educated on the topic, it’s less of a scary thing to try in their lives. If they actually know the science behind why it helps.

Spike is currently hard at work creating Weedtube.com, and getting it off the ground so cannabis content creators like herself can have a safe place to post their content without fear of having it deleted by fickle and seemingly random guidelines. You can find Stoney Spike on Instagram and Youtube.
