Cannabis StoresIn the United States, we love our drive-thrus. Drive-thru pharmacies, drive-thru coffee, drive-thru banking, drive-thru food, drive-thru alcohol in some states, and now, drive-thru cannabis. Back in May, Colorado opened the nation’s first drive-thru cannabis store. Now Maine, where you’re legally allowed to buy drive through alcohol, is looking to do the same.

Legislators in Maine have drafted a pretty ambitious bill as far as legal cannabis rollouts go. The drafted bill served as an outline for Maine’s “Adult Use Cannabis Program.” Aside from allowing for cannabis drive-thrus and delivery, the bill had some other notable proposed guidelines as well. If passed, this bill would allow for cannabis social clubs to open in June of 2019. It would also charge recreational cannabis consumers a 20 percent sales tax.

The bill was drafted by the Joint Select Committee on Marijuana Legalization, which is comprised of a wide variety of Maine politicians. Sen. Roger J. Katz serves as chair on the highly bipartisan committee. Katz gave a statement to the Press Herald regarding drafting this complicated bill.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do yet on this bill,” Katz said. “We’ve worked on it for months, but it’s a rough draft. There’s still a lot of unanswered questions that we have to work out. Some of those questions, we’re looking to the public for answers. We want to hear what they have to say. I’m sure it will be a vibrant discussion.”

Maine residents will have the chance to speak their minds on the issue at a public hearing, which is being held at 9 a.m. today, September 26, in Room 228 at the State House in Augusta. After hearing from the public on the matter, the committee will meet once more to discuss the draft on September 27 and 28.

It’s always exciting when states come up with their initial cannabis legislation. Every state is different, and as such requires a different set of laws. But hopefully, as more and more states take the plunge into legal cannabis, we have a wide variety of legal cannabis models to look to as guides for ending federal cannabis prohibition.
