[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]D[/dropcap]ream job seekers have been burned as the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has asked people to stop asking about a position to incinerate thousands of pounds of cannabis for the government.

The DEA published an order for an Arizona contractor that could incinerate cannabis at the rate of 1,000 pounds an hour for six months. The contract requires federal background checks and drug tests for employees, a fence tall enough to discourage onlooking and DEA presence at each burn. The contractor also must be licensed to incinerate the packaging materials that the cannabis was contained in when it was compressed into bales to be disposed. In the post, it mentioned the anticipation of the award to the sole contractor in the area that could fulfill the position, Tucson Iron and Metal.

However, the influx of attention about the position, including news articles, has caused the DEA Houston agency to be overtaken by phone calls from interested parties. It released a statement through a local news station, who reported on the position, asking people to stop contacting them about the incineration job.

“Although we appreciate local citizens’ willingness to offer their help, this is a complicated, large-scale government contract we’re required by law to bid every few years, and there are usually only a handful of companies with the necessary facilities and resources to help us dispose of this material. While it makes for an interesting headline, the truth is far more prosaic—our agents working across the Houston Division make a huge number of great cases, and as a result, we seize a tremendous amount of illegal drugs. Arranging for the safe and effective destruction of these drugs is just part of the job.”

To further snuff out hopeful job seekers, the job posting closed on March 25.
