The 420 Football League offers competition for your lungs

By Jasen T. Davis

Founded by business entrepreneur and Internet website mogul Kenard Durr, the 420 Football League arose as an answer to beer pong, with a stronger football flavor. Now, the 420 Football League appears to be expanding, with advertising, celebrity participants and even a little corporate sponsorship. CULTURE recently spoke with the new face of the League, Henry Hemp.

Let’s talk about who you are.

I’m just a kid from the farm who moved out to Hollywood to become an actor. I got a job as a limo driver for the stars. I ended up reading The Emperor Wears No Clothes by Jack Herer and after that I put on the hat as Henry Hemp. I would just do the Henry Hemp routine on Hollywood Boulevard as a street performer.

The founder of the 420 Football League approached me and asked me to be the face of the organization. I had been Henry Hemp for a year. He saw the positive energy that I had, and liked that I wasn’t some pothead but somebody who had great ideas for the League.

Tell me more about 420 Football League.

It’s a game you can play while medicating. You get a board that has a football pattern . . . we currently sell those . . . and you get players, markers and a pipe. The player loads the medicine into a water pipe. He has to “snap” the bowl, or clear all the medicine completely. It also means that the smoke must be cleared of the water pipe, with none seeping out. Then, the referee hits a stopwatch and watches the player. For every second they hold it, they move a yard.

A “fumble” is if you cough before you blow out the smoke. So if you choke, you fumble. Some players can go 20 or 30 yards a hit. The opposing team, however, can try to mess up his play with different methods, one of which is a time out. For instance, if that happens, the ref holds the bong for thirty seconds, making the smoke stale. The player then has to take a hit of the harsh smoke and he’s more likely to choke, and therefore get “tackled” or fumble.

You can also call a blitz. We can rush your goal by putting hash, concentrate [kief] onto the medicine which can make even hardened pros cough.

Talk to us about your celebrity sponsors and supporters.

So far we have the Liberty Bell Rastafarian Temple off of Hollywood Boulevard sponsoring a tournament this Friday. Eddie Funxta from Ed Rosenthal’s book . . . he’s an amazing cannabis genealogist. We have Pony Boy from Los Marijuanos . . . he’s been to the Amsterdam Cup many times. We also have Chef Mike from Cannabis Planet. We also have comedian January Thomas from the Free Speech Show—that’s my wife, Mrs. Hemp. Bong Rip from Bong TV Live also joins us. Melissa Allens, the director of the film The Emperor Wears No Clothes, has been a huge supporter. B-Real of Cypress Hill is also a big player and supporter.

What is in the future for the 420 Football League?

We [traveled] to Denver, Colorado, for KushCon II [cannabis lifestyle convention]. We are introducing 420 to spokespersons and possible sponsors to get the word out. We’re offering a huge line of products, but we also encourage athletes to customize their own equipment because that’s what it is, a sport. As the 420 Football League gets more popular we will expand across the country and bring a message of love to everyone.

A League of His Own

While the 420 Football League aims to bridge the gap between medicine and pigskin, Tennessee Titans wide receiver Randy Moss already made that connection. After a 2002 traffic stop, officers in Minneapolis found marijuana in the athlete’s vehicle and Moss later ended up facing misdemeanor possession charges. He tested positive for cannabis in 2001, violating the NFL’s policies. In 2005, Moss admitted to smoking marijuana during his NFL career.
