Colorado Researchers Study Cannabis and Athletes

[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]C[/dropcap]olorado researchers claim to have found a possible link between athletes and cannabis consumption for recovery and pain management. According to the study’s authors, there had been no prior research done exclusively on cannabis’ effects on adult athletes.

“There was not a lot of research on how weed helps,” Dr. Joanna Zeiger, one of the researchers who conducted the study for Canna Research Group, said. “Athletes typically don’t sleep well and are anxious, so we wanted to see what percentage of them use cannabis, their patterns of use, and what the effects are.”

In order to reach as many athletes as possible, a survey was given online for any English-speaking athletes over 21 years old. The results of the study showed that of the 1,161 athletes surveyed, 301 reported being current cannabis consumers, with a majority of consumers being men over 40 years old. Over half of the cannabis consumers reported consuming cannabis three or fewer times a week. Athletes primarily used cannabis to treat conditions such as chronic pain and anxiety. The study found a combination of THC and CBD was the most beneficial in providing well-being and calming factors for athletes, compared to just CBD alone.

Earlier this year, the University of Colorado, Boulder conducted a study that fought the “lazy stoner” stereotype and found a majority of adult cannabis consumers utilize cannabis before or during a workout, claiming that it makes the workout more enjoyable and increased their motivation.

Many current and former athletes have advocated for allowing cannabis or CBD for recovery in their respective leagues. The NBA Player’s Union has called for more research on medical cannabis for its athletes, and the NFL has plans to change its substance abuse policy in the next Collective Bargaining Agreement
