[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]T[/dropcap]here are many ways to receive cannabis education, but questions about the plant and how to consume it will always be necessary, even in legal states that are overcoming prohibition and working to create a regulated cannabis industry. In Colorado, a hotline created by nurses and professionals was just launched to help tackle misinformation.

According to Westword, the hotline’s creators, Katherine Golden and Jennifer Axcell, met while working at a cannabis clinic in Boulder. Golden is a registered nurse who used to oppose cannabis use, but is now an advocate after watching her brother use cannabis to treat his cancer. Axcell consumes medical cannabis to treat pain in place of opiates, so she was interested to get into the cannabis business.

The big idea came when the two nurses realized that even though cannabis was becoming more accepted in Colorado, there was still a lack of information, as both women themselves were even skeptical about cannabis at one time. “This is a profession people feel comfortable talking to,” Axcell told Westword. “Because of the legal nature of this plant federally, so many nurses are forced to talk about cannabis in a behind-the-scenes manner.”

The hotline, known as Leaf411, is expected to be up and running by September. The founders realize that they will be getting a lot of calls from senior citizens and others who may not be as engrossed in cannabis culture or privy to information, and they are ready to help. “There’s more scientific research being done on cannabis than any other plant for medical purposes. There is science, but there’s not a lot of quality training that is targeted toward nurses,” Axcell explained to Westword. “We’ve got nurses who work in hospice, who know where cannabis can be really effective for pain relief and quality of life.”

Colorado is a state that just passed $1 billion in cannabis revenue and doctors in the state can now prescribe medical cannabis, so a new, reliable resource to help answer cannabis questions is definitely needed in Colorado.
