Colorado Congressman Jared Polis has won the Democratic primary for governor. Polis—who was recently endorsed by NORML PAC—has been the staunch advocate for ending the nation’s failed federal prohibition on cannabis while in Congress and a tireless force in supporting Colorado’s legalization of medical cannabis.
Polis is aware of the damage the “War on Drugs” has inflicted upon American society, particularly in Colorado. “I’ve been proud to lead the fight for cannabis reform in Congress, and NORML has been an incredibly valuable partner in that effort. Here in Colorado, we’ve proven that legal cannabis creates jobs; funds schools, not cartels; and boosts our economy, not our prison population, and I look forward to growing this industry”, Polis stated in response to NORML’s endorsement on June 27. “It’s an honor to have NORML’s endorsement, and I will proudly stand with them against Jeff Sessions or anyone else who tries to come after legal cannabis in Colorado.”
Polis’s support of cannabis is strong, as he is also the leading sponsor of H.R. 499, Ending Federal Marijuana Prohibition Act of 2013. With this act, Polis hopes to decriminalize possession of cannabis at the federal level, relinquish the Drug Enforcement Administration’s regulation of cannabis under the Controlled Substances Act and authorize the Food and Drug Administration to set equal regulatory powers it has on cannabis.
Polis also told Marijuana Moment recently that he would reverse current Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper’s decisions to veto two cannabis bills (one that invested in the industry, and a different bill that would allow the sampling of products.) “If I have the opportunity to be governor of Colorado, I would sign this bill increasing access for medical marijuana to those on the autism spectrum, enabling investments in legal cannabis businesses that help reduce costs for consumers and create jobs,” he told Marijuana Moment.
Now all attention will be focused on the election in November, where Polis will take on republican primary choice, Walker Stapleton. It will be an important election, not just for cannabis support, but also because Polis would become the nation’s first openly gay man if elected governor.
