Colorado Cannabis Dispensaries Pass Underage Compliance Test

[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]T[/dropcap]eenage cannabis consumption is a major public concern, both to those who support cannabis and those who don’t. In recreational states, varying cannabis departments have developed tests to evaluate which dispensaries are obeying the law—and as it turns out, Colorado cannabis dispensaries have passed with flying colors.

According to CBS Denver, 95 percent of Colorado dispensaries that were put to the test passed. This “underage compliance test” was organized and performed by the Marijuana Enforcement Division (MED), and was represented as analyzed data in its 2017 annual report. (The report also included an update on current business licenses, the growth of plant cultivation compared to previous years and data on testing.)

In total, the undercover test was performed 264 times, and out of those instances, only 13 underage people were able to purchase cannabis.

MED Director Jim Burack said that the percentage of success was impressive, but there’s still work to be done. “While we’re pleased that the percentage of licensees passing underage compliance checks increased from 2016, that number still isn’t good enough,” he said. “We’ll continue to increase the frequency of our enforcement efforts and further educate marijuana licensees on their operational requirements vital to protecting public health and safety. Importantly, business licenses are subject to discipline, including revocation, if management is not diligent about underage enforcement and associated employee training.”

As an added fact for comparison, 89 percent of liquor stores pass similar underage tests for alcohol last year, and 94 percent of stores passed tests for tobacco sales to minors.

Colorado was the first state to approve recreational cannabis in 2012, and the extra time to solidify its regulations has had a positive lasting effect. Dispensaries in states like Oregon howeverwere not as successful.
