Colorado has been debating about their policies on edibles since legalization first began, and now they’ve finally decided to take gummy edibles that are available in well-known shapes off of the market.

According to the Sun Times, Governor John Hickenlooper officially signed a bill banning the sale of cannabis gummies shaped like people, fruit or animals on Friday, June 10.

House Bill 1436 was brought into effect as an effort to stop production of the type of gummies and candies that would entice children to want to try them. However, these three listed shapes are the only ones that have been banned. Gummies that are in other shapes will still be allowed, and gummy candies in general are still going to be on the market.

So far, this law is being met with mixed feelings. Supporters claim that it is a smart move that will help keep children from trying cannabis accidently. Others worry that this is a step towards taking away freedoms and putting stricter restrictions on cannabis and edibles in general. Opponents feel that it is the responsibility of the parent to make sure edibles, alcohol, firearms and other dangerous items for children are kept well out of their reach.

The Sun Times also reports that the Rocky Mountain Poison Control Center gets many more calls about ingested cosmetics or cleaning products than ingested edibles, lending credibility to the idea that edible ingestion is not a big problem in Colorado.

Overall, it is too soon to tell if this is the first of many legislations against edibles in candy form, or if the industry will regulate itself, as parents who use cannabis work edibles safety into their routine and teach children about the dangers of trying candy or other foods that they do not have permission to eat.
