[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]A[/dropcap]ccording to a new study, cannabis oil significantly improves the symptoms of Crohn’s disease. The new findings were presented on Monday at the United European Gastroenterology (UEG) Week 2018 in Vienna, Austria.

An Israeli team of investigators found that cannabis oil leads to clinical remission in up to 65 percent of individuals after eight weeks of treatment. For the investigation, 46 people with moderate to severe Crohn’s disease received eight weeks’ worth of an oil containing 15 percent cannabidiol (CBD) and 4 percent tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) or placebo. The group that received the cannabis oil was observed having a much more significant drop in the number of symptoms. While 65 percent of the group that received cannabis oil went into clinical remission, only 35 percent of the other group went into remission.

“Cannabis has been used for centuries to treat a wide range of medical conditions, and studies have shown that many people with Crohn’s disease use cannabis regularly to relieve their symptoms,” Dr Timna Naftali said in a press release.  “It has always been thought that this improvement was related to a reduction in inflammation in the gut and the aim of this study was to investigate this.” Naftali is a gastroenterology specialist at Meir Hospital and Kupat Holim Clinic, Tel Aviv University, Israel.

But contrary to previous theories, cannabis oil doesn’t appear to reduce gut inflammation in people living with Crohn’s disease. Rather, the cannabis oil was effective in reducing symptoms via other mechanisms that are not yet completely understood.

According to the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, Crohn’s disease is an incurable inflammatory disorder. While medical cannabis is effective for people suffering from intractable or incurable epilepsy, the plant may be effective for other incurable illnesses such as Crohn’s disease. Gut disorders are not easy to treat, but medical cannabis could lead to new approaches in medicine.
