[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]C[/dropcap]annabis deliveries will be available throughout the state of California, regardless of local laws. The California Bureau of Cannabis Control announced that cannabis home deliveries will be allowed statewide, even in communities that have previously banned commercial cannabis sales.

“The way it would work is similar to pizza delivery,” California Cannabis Industry Association (CCIA) Communications and Outreach Director Josh Drayton said. “If a pizza delivery company is in one city, it can deliver into another. The way that this would read for cannabis is that if a delivery service is located in a regulated area, and they are licensed, they are still able to deliver into banned cities and counties.”

The move was well received by cannabis companies that note large stretches of the state do not allow recreational sales, which prevents residents from enjoying their legal right to consume cannabis. The Bureau of Cannabis Control said the state overwhelmingly supports delivery statewide, however, local governments aren’t too thrilled as the new ruling diminishes their authority. Police chiefs and other critics opposed the regulation, predicting the new ruling would create an unruly market of hidden cannabis transactions that aren’t subject to the testing regulations California has passed and that aren’t subject to the various taxes from legal sales.

Cannabis business advocates welcome the opportunity to expand into parts of California and believe the new ruling on deliveries will help deter black-market cannabis sales. Critics of the ruling believe the delivery rule is overreaching into an area that should be subject to local control. The League of California Cities has referred to the new ruling as “extremely troubling.”

All delivery vehicles are required by the state to be tracked by a GPS locator and the amount carried by the driver during the delivery should be a “reasonable amount” and locked inside a safe inside the vehicle.
