Calgary Group Hosts “Speed-Dating” Service to Match Growers with Consumers

speed datingThe concept of speed dating is sound, if you don’t make a connection in the first couple of minutes, you are probably better just moving on. A new group though is taking that approach with medical cannabis, and it’s producing results.

The Calgary Cannabis Society (CCS) is a Canadian not-for-profit organization that hosts events where perspective cannabis patients meet with select growers to discuss which type of cannabis is the best fit for them. In Canada, patients get their cannabis by growing it themselves, purchasing it from one of the 36 licensed producers of the plant, or by finding someone willing to grow it for them. Canada allows for potential growers to cultivate enough cannabis for two.

The CCS held its first event last week to bring growers and potential partners together. During the event cultivators stayed in designated areas while potential clients stopped by for a 10-minute interaction.

“Just like in love . . . I think there’s [a cannabis grower] for everybody,” Lisa Mamakind-Adams, Interim Director of the Calgary Cannabis Society, said. “Finding that grower can prove extremely difficult in a part of the world that doesn’t offer social spaces for cannabis consumers to gather.”

Lisa Kirkman of CCS said that all the necessary government documentation needed for both the grower and consumer was on hand for the event. Federal law dictates that all growers must submit to a background check, and grow for a max of two people at a time.

“It’s an extremely important thing,” said Kirkman. “As a patient I can tell you to be able to see your plants, yourself, pick your strains, to be able to say what’s working, what’s not—even just visiting a beautiful garden is very good for anyone’s health.”

Nearby areas are also interested in hosting an event. The CCS has been contacted by individuals from Edmonton, British Columbia and Ontario to host a similar event.
