Now in its 24th year, Burning Man’s pagan-loving, grandiose summer solstice affair between humans and nature once again rises from the ash of Black Rock. First officially held in San Francisco back in 1986 as an experiment in community, radical self-expression and radical self-reliance, BM has continued along those ideological lines, expanding over the years to include a wide array of art and artistry within its “tentopolis.” This year’s theme, in fact, centers on these very green and very organic dwellings that spring up, and calls attention to the overcrowded Metropoli and the negatives that go along with living in urban worlds. Like the tent cities of Burning Man, these cities are magnetic hubs of social interaction, yet, the current exodus from six-lane highways, big-box stores and horizons of asphalted parking lots to rural hinterlands is on the rise. The public consciousness is in revolutionary mode, rejecting the staples of capitalism and consumerism and looking for new ways to live, and live free. So get your own personal pagan god on, or none at all, and join the throngs of thousands who make pilgrimage to this clothing-optional event each year, living alongside one another in hundreds of themed camps, enjoying just as many interactive artworks. Here there is no tribe and no caste, just humanity—all for one and one for all. (Jane Mast)
