[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]T[/dropcap]he state of Nevada is now offering its first accredited college course on budtending and is planning an expansion of course offerings.

The University of Nevada Las Vegas unveiled a course teaching the history, regulation and safety standards for dealing with cannabis. The online fall course is offered three times during the term, and the course will only take about 5-8 hours to finish.

The class is offered through a partnership with the Academy of Cannabis Science in Seattle, Washington. “We started because unfortunately in a lot of the regions that have legalized cannabis the education requirement has kind of been an afterthought,” said Trey Reckling, founder of the academy. Academy of Cannabis Science classes are already offered in the state of Washington, and the program is hoping to expand to California and the east coast.

“We feel like we’re training the trainers, and if we can help people in the front lines to be as knowledgeable about this as possible,” Reckling said. “It is a fantastic opportunity, and really, that’s something not easy to forget.”

The course will not only help those who complete it gain employment in cannabis business, but also can be a jumping ground for other professions to support the growing cannabis industry.  Three more classes are being created for the spring semester, including retail cannabis management, cannabis recommendations for pets, and replacing opioid treatments with cannabis.

“A lot of people think to work in this industry you can only be a grower or budtender,” Reckling says. “But there are tons of jobs within the industry we need to fill; we need lawyers, accountants, veterinarians—you name it. It’s our job to further cannabis education for all types of industry positions.”

“I see the benefits for the community and tourism in particular,” said Joe Miera, vice-provost for the Division of Education Outreach at UNLV.  “We think it will help them gain entry to the market because they’ll have at least some certification; some education to back up their enthusiasm for the job.”
