It was probably shocking to most cinephiles that Kathryn Bigelow became the first gal to grab a director’s Oscar this year—her claim to fame up until The Hurt Locker was 1991’s schmaltzy Point Break. But it was not shocking to lovers of camp classics that Point Break—a Patrick Swayze-Keanu Reeves-Gary Busey stoner-surfer-bank robber flick—was turned into a live-action parody. Thanks to the superior comedy skills of writer Jaime Keeling and a host of improv geniuses, Point Break Live! recreates the entire ghastly film: violent bank robberies by the Presidents of the United States (with Condi Rice or other politicos thrown in), wavy wipe-outs, bud sparking, inept gunplay, cuddly man-love and mind-numbing dialogue. Reeves’ character, ex-footballer Johnny Utah, is pulled from the audience and reads his lines via cue-card, and productions have been known to attract surprise celebrity participants like Mr. Busey himself. Note that they use real live water during the show, so wear your parka if you’re in the first three rows—just make sure you have your Snuggie on to make toking that much easier. (Stacy Davies)
